The GEM DESKTOP only appears when Edith is used as an
application under a single tasking Operating System.

It shows an Edith logo, has a menu bar and a set of
function keys. Clicking on the function keys on the
desktop is the same as pressing the keys themselves.
Move the function key box around by clicking the left
mouse button on the pads left of F1 and right of F10,
holding the mouse, and dragging the box along. It will
move immediately as you move the mouse.

The MENU BAR is divided into the following menus:

EDITH About dialog and desk accessories

FILE File operations. Press help on File
               Selector window for info

(Advanced:) When the environment variable PREVDESK is
set to 'yes', Edith will copy the root object of the
desktop when it is launched. This option is useful for
e.g. Gemini users. However, this does not work with
memory protection.
