Chagall Reference Tools <F3> 12.5.93
===============================================

Clicking on 'Tools...' in the 'Toolbox' menu
or pressing <F3> brings up a set of icons from
which various tools can be selected with a
mouse click or via a key in the numeric keypad
(the correct key is identified at bottom left
of each tool icon). This dialog box is non-modal,
so can remain open while working.

To configure a tool you can call up a 'Tool
parameters' dialog box with a double-click on
the corresponding tool, or via the <0> key in the
in the numeric keypad. This dialog box is also
non-modal. At left you can select the shape of
the tool, though for some tools a round shape is
   mandatory.

At top right you can choose between three
intensity steps. If the 'Mask' option below this
is switched on, then the tool will respect the
   mask during use.

Below this are the selection fields for step-
and tool-size. The step-size determines how many
pixels the tool will move when following the
mouse before it draws again. Clicking on the
selection field reveals a box which you can clear
with <Esc> and type in values between 0 - 257.
The higher the value the faster the tool becomes
but if you move the mouse too quickly then the
tools will 'break up' and cannot work in a
continuous manner any more. If the step size is
'0' then the tools in CHAGALL draw as normal. For
steps >0 the mouse positions are 'accumulated' and
the tool will follow the mouse and work continuously.

The tool-size can also be altered in a similar
manner between 1 and 255, or by dragging the
corresponding slider or clicking on its arrows,
but the size must be an odd number.
Example: A pen with a size of '15' should be used
with a step size of '4'. Sensible step sizes are
up to roughly half the tool size.

You can change the tool whose parameters you are
adjusting by using the 'Tool' PopUp at the bottom
of the box and then selecting the required tool
from the list. You can also pre-assign different
colours, step- and tool-sizes to different tools.
This is useful since by leaving the 'Tools' icons
displayed you can change the working tool during
drawing just by clicking on the new tool without(!)
first having to activate the box.

For all tools that have a colour of their own you
can set this by clicking in the colour square that
appears when you click on the colour patch in 'Tool
parameters' (see Select colourCOLORBOX), or use numerical
input by clicking on the three colour values in turn.
Alternatively you can also change the colour while
drawing/painting by selecting it from a block or
   point in the picture:

   - With <Shift>-mouse click in the picture you can
select a single colour that will be used by the
     whole tool.

   - With <Alternate>-mouse click in the picture, on the
other hand, you can adopt the area lying under the
     cursor as a stamping tool.

If the option Respect mask..\MASK\MASK is active when you
form the stamper, then Chagall will adopt not just
the picture contents as a tool, but also the mask
at the corresponding position. The tool shape can
be freely defined in this manner.
